What Hellbender 70 Bottom Bracket Fits My Bike?

The Hellbender 70 bottom bracket is available in BSA threaded, PF41/92, PF30, T47 and BB30 variations. Please consult your bike’s manufacturer, local bike shop, or contact us for technical assistance.

What Hellbender 70 Bottom Bracket fits my cranks?

First you must ensure that the bottom bracket bearing size is compatible with your crank’s spindle diameter. If you have eeWings, then any of our 30mm Hellbender Neo or 30mm Hellbender 70 bottom brackets could work, and if you have a Dub crank, then any of our 29mm (Dub) Hellbender 70 Bottom Brackets could work.

Second, you must ensure that you have enough available crank spindle length to pass through the bottom bracket shell and the bottom bracket itself.  Our external bottom bracket cups are 11mm wide each (including the seal) and our press-fit 41/92 bottom bracket adds an additional 2mm of width on each side (including the seal).  Therefore, you must have at least an additional 22mm of available crank spindle length for our external cup options, and an additional 4mm of spindle length for our press-fit 41/92 option.

What is the warranty on my Hellbender 70 Bottom Bracket?

The Hellbender 70 Bottom Bracket comes with a 1 year warranty against any manufacturers defects (2 years in the EU).

What tools do I need to use to install my Hellbender 70 Bottom Bracket?

Depending on the variation, a 12 notch 46mm bottom bracket tool and/or a standard press fit bottom bracket tool is required for installation. Please refer to the Instruction Manual section for more details.

General Headset

I need a replacement crown race. How do I know which one to buy?

We make five different crown race sizes, and they are labeled by “bearing size” first, and “crown race seat diameter” second. For example, a 52/40 crown race will work with a 52mm bearing and 40mm crown race seat diameter. First, figure out what size bearing your lower headset assembly takes. Then, confirm the crown race seat diameter on your fork. If you’re having trouble accurately determining these numbers, please visit your local bike shop for help, or visit the S.H.I.S page and our “I want to replace the bearing in my Cane Creek headset. What size do I need?” FAQ.

I want to replace the bearing in my Cane Creek headset. What size do I need?

  • EC30 will take a 38mm bearing
  • EC34 will take a 41mm bearing
  • ZS44 will take a 41mm bearing
  • ZS49 will take a 41mm bearing
  • EC44/40 will take a 52mm bearing
  • EC44/33 will take a 47mm bearing
  • EC49 will take a 52mm bearing
  • ZS56 will take a 52mm bearing
  • ZS62 will take a 52mm bearing
  • IS41 will take a 41mm bearing
  • IS42 will take a 42mm bearing
  • IS52 will take a 52mm bearing

All complete Cane Creek headset assemblies (top or bottom) will use a 36×45 degree contact angle bearing, with the exception of our IS47/33 and EC44/33 headset assemblies. IS47/33 and EC44/33 will use a 45×45 degree contact angle bearing.

How do I identify my current headset?

In most cases you can simply look at the top cover of the headset, all Cane Creek headsets are clearly identified with a model name in this area. OEM headsets may not have a model name or much information at all. In this case you may need to remove certain parts to measure your head tube in order to identify what you have. All Cane Creek models as of 2011 have Standardized Headset Identification System (SHIS) nomenclature marked on the cup for quick identification.

My headset says Cane Creek and has a patent number, but no model name. Can you help me??

Cane Creek brought threadless headset technology to the bicycle industry in the early 1990s, beginning the revolution in fork and head-tube innovation. We held the patent for nearly 20 years, and during that time licensed the technology to qualified manufacturing partners around the world. Many of these partners elected to etch the “Cane Creek” name and the patent number on the top cover of the headset, in recognition of the license.

Regretfully, due to the sheer volume of headsets produced, we are unable to stock spare parts nor assemblies from these licensed headsets. For direct replacement, please visit your local bike shop, or contact us at 1-828-641-9560 and we can help you identify an equivalent Cane Creek product that will fit your bike.

How do I install my threadless headset?

While relatively straightforward, headset installation does require some mechanical knowledge of bikes and certain specialty tools. We suggest heading down to your local bike shop and letting a professional mechanic take care of your installation. But if you want to do it yourself… check out our instructional video on headset installation and reference your Owner’s Manual.  We also have headset and crown race installation tools available to purchase by clicking HERE

How do I adjust my threadless headset?

It’s a good idea to periodically check for good headset adjustment. There should be no looseness, play or knocking in the headset. If you detect any of these, then your headset should be adjusted. It’s a relatively simple, straightforward task and we’ve created a short video to walk you through the process.

Does my threadless headset need maintenance and, if so, how should I take care of this?

Yes, all moving parts on your bike should be regularly serviced and your headset is no different. Check out our instructional video on headset maintenance for a quick walk-through.

Can I replace my headset's bearing without replacing the entire headset?

In most cases yes, especially if your headset uses sealed cartridge bearings. The first step is identifying the model of your headset. Cane Creek branded headsets should have model names that can be referenced for replacements. If your headset is the OEM or factory installed headset it is usually necessary to upgrade to a new unit.

Do I need a tapered head tube to use a tapered fork on my bike?

In most cases, yes. However; with the introduction of certain models from Cane Creek, tapered forks can be run in two straight head tubes. The classic 1.5” head tube has an inside diameter (ID) of 49.61mm, with use of our ZS49/28.6 TOP assembly, a tapered fork can be used instead of the straight 1.5” that head tube was intended for. With the EC44/40 Bottom assembly, non tapered 1 1/8” head tubes with a 44mm ID can utilize a tapered fork as well.

Do you make an adapter that will allow me to use a tapered fork on my bike?

Your bicycle’s headtube must have an inside diameter of 44mm or larger in order to use any tapered steer fork.  Traditional 1 1/8 in headtubes, or 34mm inside diameter headtubes, cannot accept a tapered steering column fork, therefore we do not make an adapter that will allow you to use a tapered steering column on a traditional 1 1/8 in headtube.

If you are unsure about the measurement of your bicycle’s headtube, you can consult our Standardized Headset Identification System (SHIS) or consult your favorite local bike shop.

Please note: Nominal insertion bore depth for 44mm head-tubes is 9mm. EC44/40 requires an insertion depth of 15mm. Park Tool Reamer 788 should be used with the supplied spacer to reach the 15mm bore depth for EC44/40 Bottoms.

Can I get more clearance between the bottom of my headset and the top of my fork crown?

Yes you can. We make our 52/40mm crown race available with some extra height. There’s a 3mm and a 6mm version. Both are available on our Headset Parts & Accessories page under “Solutions.”

What's up with this gold ring? Where does it go?

The gold-colored Interlok® Filler Ring fits into the top-most Interlok groove in your cockpit setup to provide a flat surface for placement of a non-Interlok-compatible stem. This could be the headset top cover (as supplied) or the top-most Interlok spacer in your spacer stack. It is not placed inside the headset. (Note that the Interlok Filler Ring is not necessary for placement of a non-Interlok stem with Interlok top covers or spacers.)

If you need a replacement Interlok® Filler Ring, head on over to our Headset Parts & Accessories page. You’ll find them under every series headset and in the “Solutions” section to boot.

What are Interlok Spacers, and do I have to use Interlok Spacers with Cane Creek headsets?

Are they necessary? No, but there’s a few good reasons why you might want to use them: Our patented Interlok spacer design provides solid interface between the top cover and spacer stack, meaning they “nest” together and into the top of the bearing cover, which helps minimize shifting under load while riding; and our “Scalloped” spacers shave 25% in weight off a standard alloy spacer stack. Where you want your stem height to be will determine how many and what size spacers you may need

I've got an old Schwinn with an ICBM headset. Do you make one?

Unfortunately we no longer produce or stock any complete replacement headsets, though we do have a limited number of replacement bearing kits. They are available in the “Solutions” section of our Headset Parts & Accessories page.

Angle Set

Is my bike AngleSet compatible?

The AngleSet requires a minimum head tube Inside Diameter (ID) of 44mm.  If your frame has an ID of 44mm or larger on both the top and bottom it is AngleSet compatible.  Certain head tubes will only be able to utilize a straight 1 1/8” steerer with the AngleSet (see our S.H.I.S. poster).

Can I mix and match AngleSet cups to create different angles?

Cane Creek has engineered, designed and tested Angleset in partnership with a variety of frame manufacturers, up to 1.5 degrees of offset. We don’t recommend building configurations beyond what is offered in stock assemblies.

Where can I find information about the base tune on my shock?

Factory Neutral base tune settings can be found here. Additionally, we also work very closely with select manufacturers to specifically tune rear shocks to certain frames. If you have a manufacturer specifically-tuned rear shock, you can find information about base tunes here.

I’m thinking about upgrading my bike to a coil shock. What are the practical performance differences between the DBcoil, DBcoil CS, and DBcoil IL?

It’s important to note that DBcoil is no longer available directly from Cane Creek. However, you may still be able to find the DBcoil at some of our partner distributors. In addition, you can check out its upgrade, the DBcoil CS, which has the same fitment.

DBcoil CS is a great option for trail, enduro, and downhill riders who prefer the linear spring feel and exceptional low speed sensitivity of a coil shock, but desire access to a climbing platform. “CS” stands for “climb switch” and is a proprietary feature that adjusts low-speed damping characteristics on-the-fly keeping the suspension fully active while you climb. This results in better connection to the trail and increased efficiency without annoying pedal-bob. However, when you’re ready to descend, it’s all full open, full squish Double Barrel. The piggyback reservoir is ideal for heat dissipation and preventing shock fatigue on long descents.

DBcoil IL is a great option for trail riders looking for an inline shock that packs in all of the function of a piggyback coil shock, with the same features as the DBcoil CS, but in a lighter (~333g less weight, depending on size compared to DBcoil IL with VALT® spring vs. DBcoil CS with standard spring) and sleeker package. While the DBcoil CS and DBcoil IL are both available in some of the same size options, riders hoping to take their DBcoil IL down super long descents may sacrifice heat dissipation and experience some shock fatigue.

I used the spring rate calculator and I’m in between two spring rates. Which one should I choose?

Rider weight, riding style, and desired ride quality all play a role in determining spring rate. Use our spring rate calculator (available on the shock’s page) to figure out which spring rate is best for you. If you are having trouble deciding between two different spring rates, consider this: A lower spring rate will have a more planted, supple feel, but will bottom out more easily on bigger hits. Conversely, a higher spring rate will provide a more lively feel and help the damper control bottom out for more aggressive riding. It is also important to consider how much preload you plan to use. Preload affects the energy in the spring. Increasing the preload will increase the ride height and reduce sag. If you find yourself needing less than 1 turn of preload (turning Spring Adjustment Nut counterclockwise) to achieve desired sag, you should switch to a lower spring rate. If you need over 6 turns of preload (turning Spring Adjustment Nut clockwise – six turns is max) to achieve desired sag, you should switch to a higher spring rate. After you’ve determined which spring is best for you, use our Tune Your Shock resource to dial everything in!

Will this shock void my bike manufacturer's warranty?

You will void your warranty if you attempt to use a different shock size or mounting type outside of your bike manufacturer’s specifications.

Forks

Does it have Double Barrel technology?

Helm is a completely new product from Cane Creek, and has a different approach to damping relative to our Double Barrel technology. Because a leverage ratio is applied to a rear shock within the rear suspension design of a frame, and a fork has no leverage ratio (body weight directly applies to the fork’s travel), a rear shock experiences around three times the amount of damping forces that a front fork experiences. Therefore, Double Barrel technology for rear shocks doesn’t provide the same type of benefit for front forks.

What is the damper design?

Helm’s damper is a closed cartridge mono-tube design that provides control of high speed compression, low speed compression, and rebound.

What is the travel?

Helm Air 27.5 forks will have a maximum travel setting of 170mm.  Helm Coil 27.5, Helm Coil 29 and Helm Air 29 forks will have a maximum travel setting of 160mm.

Helm Forks are travel adjustable, but are optimized for travel settings between 170mm and 130mm of travel.

Helm Air forks use travel spacers to adjust travel.  Two 10mm travel spacers are included with every Helm Air fork.  Helm Coil forks are adjusted by changing the location of the spring perch (coil piston) on the travel-indexed compression rod. This procedure requires no additional parts.

Is the travel easily adjustable?

Travel adjustment must be performed internally. Instructions for this procedure can be found within the Helm instruction manual included with every fork.

It is recommended that an experienced mechanic perform the procedure.

What much does it weigh?

Helm 170mm forks weigh 2070 grams (4.56 pounds).

What colors are available?

Helm is available in a matte black finish with white/grey decals and key gold anodized parts. For a limited time, a matte blue version is available for Helm with orange/teal/red decals and key black anodized parts.

Will the blue Launch Edition be limited in quantity?

There will be only 300 Blue Launch Edition Helm forks available for purchase.

Is it Boost spacing?

Helm forks are only available in 15mmx110mm BOOST spacing with traditional end caps.

Can I use it with a non-Boost front wheel?

Yes, a non-Boost front wheel can be used with the proper spacer adapter kit.

Are spacers kits for non-Boost front wheels available through Cane Creek?

No, adapter kits are specific to wheel models. Please see your wheel manufacturers’ specifications. Options can be found at wheelsmfg.com

How is the air spring curve adjusted? Does it use tokens?

Helm’s air spring curve is adjusted internally by an indexed rod and static piston assembly, no additional parts need to be purchased/installed to perform this change. Air volume can be adjusted by removing the air valve assembly out of the left leg of the fork using a 30mm wrench and moving the static piston up or down the indexed rod to achieve the proper spring curve.

Is the thru-axle design unique to the Helm?

Yes, the D-LOC thru-axle system is unique to Helm.

Can I use a non-QR thru-axle?

No, Helm’s D-Loc axle must be used on Helm forks, using any other axle system will void its warranty.

What is the max tire size?

The maximum tire size is listed as 27.5×2.6in. But always check tire clearance with no air in the fork at full compression.

Is there a reduced offset version available?

Our Helm 29 is available in 51mm offset AND 44mm offset, however the 44mm offset 29 will not be available until April 2019.

Our Helm 27.5 is only available in 44mm offset

What is the retail price?

Helm retail price is $1,100 USD.

What is the warranty?

All Cane Creek suspension products, including Helm, have a limited one (1) year warranty, subject to limitations.

What adjustments does it have?

Helm forks are 7-way adjustable: 10 positions of high speed compression , 20 positions of low speed compression, 15 positions of low speed rebound, 8 positions volume reduction, independent positive and negative air chambers. And internal travel adjustment.

Does it have to be sent in for servicing?

Yes, for best performance, Cane Creek recommends a Fork Lower service for every 50 hours of use. Additionally, a Full Fork air spring and damper rebuild performed by a Cane Creek authorized service center for every 100 hours of use.

How is the negative spring pressure set?

During inflation through the air valve on the left leg of the fork, an additional step is required for properly setting sag with appropriate negative air pressure. Charging the air valve only adds air to the positive chamber of the air spring. To inflate the negative air chamber, charge the air valve of the positive chamber at the top of the fork, a button on the bottom of the left leg opens a valve and transfers air from the positive air chamber to the negative air chamber.

How is the negative spring pressure adjusted?

Because the two air chambers are isolated, the rider can set different air pressures in the differing chambers for the desired feel. First, inflate the positive air chamber, then press the negative air chamber equalizer button. Once the two air chambers have the same amount of pressure, either increase or decrease the amount of air in the positive chamber. The negative air chamber will remain at the original psi relative to the change in positive air pressure.

Thudbuster ST

Can I tune the Thudbuster for my weight?

Yes. Every new Thudbuster ST seatpost includes a set of elastomers to fit your weight and riding style. The Thudbuster will come with a medium firm elastomer (150-200lbs / 68-90kg rider weight) pre-installed in the post. Thudbuster will also come with a Soft Elastomer (100-150lbs / 45-68kg rider weight) and a Firm elastomer (200-250lbs / 90-115kg rider weight) inside the box.  For really lightweight and heavier riders, we also make Extra Soft (under 100 / 45kg rider weight) and Extra Firm (250-330lbs / 115-150kg rider weight) Elastomers. They are available on our Seatpost Parts and Accessories page.

For detailed elastomer installation instructions, check out our complete instruction manuals for the ST or LT.

Yes. The Thudbuster uses a typical saddle-clamp mechanism, allowing you to use any saddle that has the standard double-mounting rail design.

How do I change the spring rate on my Thudbuster?

Thudbuster ST uses a two piece elastomer system. The inner elastomer can be pressed out by hand, and exchanged with the desired spring rated elastomer.

How do I know what diameter (size) to order?

The Thudbuster follows standard seatpost diameters. Different bicycles require different diameter seatposts. To find out the diameter of your seatpost, you must remove the seatpost from the bicycle frame and look for the size, which is stamped just below the “Minimum Insertion” line toward the bottom. The number will be a three-digit number (such as 26.8 or 27.2 or 31.6). If you are unable to read the size, you may need to take the seatpost to your local bike shop and have them measure it using calipers.

Is there a way to fit the Thudbuster suspension onto my existing seatpost or dropper post?

No. The Thudbuster is a complete seatpost that replaces your existing seatpost.

My saddle is really low. Will there be enough room for the Thudbuster's suspension mechanism on my bike?

The suspension mechanism requires at least 101mm (ST) from the saddle rails to the bicycle frame. This is a reasonable clearance that almost all riders with a properly sized frame will have.

What does minimum insertion line mean?

The minimum insertion line represents the least amount of seatpost length required to be installed inside the bicycle’s seat tube. Thudbuster requires a minimum of 100mm of insertion for all models.

What if my bike uses a different size seat post other 27.2, 30.9 and 31.6mm?

Cane Creek offers various seatpost shims to accommodate a variety of seatpost diameters larger than 27.2. Click on the link provided to see the shim sizes that are available. Seatpost Parts and Accessories

What is the setback on the Thudbuster ST

0mm

This is the setback of the static (unweighted) seatpost.  The setback will change once seated on the seatpost, and that amount will vary based on rider weight, elastomer choice, and bicycle geometry.

What kind of spring does the Thudbuster use?

The Thudbuster uses a rubber-like material (a polyurethane elastomer) combined with two pivoting arms to suspend the rider.

Why do my ST elastomers pop out while riding?

Perhaps you have installed your Thudbuster ST seatpost backwards.  Be sure the height markings face the front of the bike!

Here is a link to our Thudbuster ST Installation Guide

100mm

How tall is the parallelogram system on the top of the eeSilk post?

70mm

What is the Maximum Insertion on the eeSilk post?

280mm

Thudbuster

What is the setback on the Thudbuster?

Thudbuster LT: 13.5mm

Thudbuster ST: 10.9mm

These are the setbacks of the static (unweighted) seatposts.  The setback will change once seated on the seatpost, and that amount will vary based on rider weight, elastomer choice, and bicycle geometry.

What kind of spring does the Thudbuster use?

The Thudbuster is an elastomer-based suspension system. The elastomers are constructed of a special blend of polyurethane in five different durometers (stiffnesses). Each elastomer is centrifuge-cast at 300 times the force of gravity to ensure the best quality and highest durability possible.

Can I tune the Thudbuster for my weight?

Yes. Every new Thudbuster ST & LT seatpost includes a set of elastomers – Soft (#3), Medium (#5), and Firm (#7) – to fit your weight and riding style. For really light and heavy riders, we also make Extra Soft elastomers (#1) and Extra Firm elastomers (#9). All elastomer options are available on our Seatpost Parts & Accessories page.

For detailed elastomer installation instructions, check out our complete instruction manuals for the ST or LT.

How do I know what diameter (size) to order?

The Thudbuster follows standard seatpost diameters. Different bicycles require different diameter seatposts. If you are unable to read the size, you may need to take the seatpost to your local bike shop and have them measure it using calipers.

Is there a way to fit the Thudbuster suspension onto my existing seatpost?

No. The Thudbuster is a complete seatpost that replaces your existing seatpost.

My saddle in really low. Will there be enough room for the Thudbuster's suspension mechanism on my bike?

The suspension mechanism requires at least 144mm (LT)/98mm (ST) from the saddle rails to the bicycle frame. This is a reasonable clearance that almost all riders with a properly sized frame will have.

Can I use my existing saddle with the Thudbuster?

Yes. The Thudbuster uses a typical saddle-clamp mechanism, allowing you to use any saddle that has the standard double-mounting rail design.

Brakes & Levers

Will Cross Top Levers fit my handle bars?

The two sizes of the Cross Top levers are listed by the size of clamping portion of the handlebar, this does not reflect the actual size of the clamp on the brake lever.  All road (drop) bars taper from the canter portion of the bar to a smaller diameter, this narrower section of the bar is the intended position for the lever.  Therefore the lever can be purchased based on the clamp size of your bars and should fit the bar on the narrower section.

What is the reach on the Scr-3l Brake Caliper?

The reach is adjustable from 47 to 57mm.

Are the Scr-5 Brake Levers compatible with cantilever brakes?

Yes, the SCR-5 levers create enough cable pull for linear pull brakes.  The SCR-5 is not compatible with V-brakes or mechanical disc brakes.  Note:  Avid’s BB5 Road Disc brake is compatible with the SCR-5 lever.

Are Drop V levers compatible with all road brakes?

Drop V levers are not compatible with standard road or cantilever brakes. They must be used with linear pull brakes such as V-brakes. They are also compatible with mechanical disk brakes.
