As a company founded in the mountains of western North Carolina, Cane Creek Cycling Components has deep roots in the community and culture of the Appalachian Mountains. The Pisgah National Forest (PNF) and its endless collection of ridgelines, rivers and cliffs provides an important, unique habitat for an incredible variety of wildlife.
This unique habitat that nurtures Hellbenders (giant salamanders), bald eagles, black bears and more, also provides incredible opportunities for outdoor recreation. The PNF has quickly become one of the mecca’s for the modern mountain biker, prompting many locals to pick up the sport, and bringing in people from all over the world. With the increased number of trail users – Pisgah needs our support.
Cane Creek has been promoting the well being and sustainability of Pisgah for year’s through efforts like the ongoing Pisgah Project Bike Raffle which has provided the forest with over $120,000 in funding. But now, in our first collected effort – Cane Creek Cycling Components shut down our facility to bring our team out to help support the sustainable trail building – shoulder to shoulder with local trailbuilders. On Tuesday May 3, 2022 – 25 Cane Creek employees met up with Jon Lane and a number of other members from the G5 Trail Collective and Camp Grier in Old Fort, North Carolina.
The G5 Trail Collective has been spearheading the effort behind a new sustainable multi-use trail project in this region of the Pisgah National Forest. Once completed, their efforts will bring 42 miles of new accessible trails – connecting some of Pisgah’s classics.
Since November of 2021, Jon Lane has been on site as the first sections of trails are prepped, cut in and hand finished. He has been helping to instruct volunteer efforts and was pleasantly surprised by the trail work efficiency the Cane Creek team possesses.
“A very impressive amount of work got done by the folks at Cane Creek, who are amazing trail stewards and community partners in addition to producing exceptional cycling components. From all of us at G5 Trail Collective and Camp Grier, we are absolutely blown away! Thank you, Cane Creek for spending the day with us and making a huge difference!”
With more accessible trails, more people will be able to get out and enjoy the forest in more sustainable ways – hopefully leading to more people realizing how fantastic Pisgah is. Everyone has to start somewhere and all though many of Pisgah’s legendary mountain bike trails are known for their epic rock sections, switch back turns and ridiculous root balls. Trails, like the one our team helped cut in (which is a connector trail from the Camp Grier property) are critical for new riders and eliminating sections of paved roads while connecting larger routes. The Cane Creek team plans to continue to support the well being and sustainability of Pisgah and to continue getting our hands dirty on more company trail days.
See you on the trail!
