Our 40-Series headset is the entry point for performance, quality, and value. Drawing from the premium 110-Series design, the 40-Series includes all the features necessary for a durable, lightweight, and easy to use headset.
Highlights:
We make headsets easier. Our headsets use interchangeable parts and over forty configurations to meet almost every size need. Sold in straight and tapered assemblies or tops & bottoms, tops are generally available in either short (9mm) or tall (15mm) bearing covers to further customize the look of your cockpit setup.

*Our ZN40 bearings (used in all 40 Series headsets) can feel rough in hand initially. This is a necessary side effect of the corrosion-resistant zinc coating used on the balls and races. This initial roughness wears in, becoming smoother with use, and extends the overall lifespan of the bearings.
Featuring a full alloy construction – sealed cartridge bearings, 6000 series alloy cups and materials, and a sealed steel crown race, the Forty series headset sets the standard for all other headsets to be judged.
The ZN40 bearings are corrosion-resistant zinc-coated, machined steel cartridge bearings with hardened steel balls, which vastly increases the longevity of the 40 series headsets.
Our patented Interlok spacer design provides solid interface between the top cover and spacer stack, meaning they “nest” together and into the top of the bearing cover, which helps minimize shifting under load while riding; and shave 25% in weight off a standard alloy spacer stack. Spacers sold separately
In 1992, we brought the Aheadset®, the original threadless headset, to market – kicking off a major change in the way bicycle frames and forks would be developed going forward.
The original design of that revolutionary headset is still found in almost all bikes on the market today.
All of our complete headsets use bearings with 45deg outer angles, and 36deg inner angles. Therefore angles of bearing seat in cups is 45 and our crown races are mostly 36. We do sell some* bearings with 45/45 angles and a couple 45deg crown races individually to handle unique situations.
Ben Rea answered on December 1, 2023 store managerThe ZS56/30 will work with a 1 1/8" straight steerer tube and the ZS56/40 will work with a 1 1/8"-1 1/2" tapered steerer tube. The only difference is the inside diameter of the crown race.

It's a perfect blend of price and quality. I'm building a gravel bike for my wife from an old MTB frame and components I had sitting around. The original headset was shot, so I bought the cane creek 40 series to replace it because of the price and quality. It installed easily, is both stout and smooth, and I've no doubt it will last forever. Looks good, too.
