Q & A

Is the 40 series, 52mm-40mm steel crown (BAA0010s) race made for a 36 deg internal, 45 deg external bearing? Thx Jonathan Chhun asked on September 25, 2023

Yes. All of our crown races, unless noted otherwise, are for 36°x45° bearings.

Which crown race is compatible with a Cane Creek TH-848 headset please? I have one fitted to a 2007 Kona Kula with a straight 1 1/8" headtube. I want to fit a spare crown race to a set of Rock Shock Rebas to make it easy to swap between rigid and suspension forks Dave Mundow asked on August 29, 2023

The TH-848 is not a Cane Creek headset but was made under out license since we held the patent on the Threadless headset. It appears your Kula uses an EC34 headset which can only be used with straight 1-1/8" forks. The crown race used was a 41mm/30mm. Our part # is BAA0008S

Will the +3 and +6 crown races work with any of the headset options including the Hellbender 70? Ben asked on June 27, 2023

Yes. The +3mm and +6mm crown race are for tapered 1-1/8"-1.5" forks and 52mm lower headset bearings. As long as your headset/fork match those specs you can use these taller stack crown races with 40 Series, Hellbender70, 110 series and even headsets from other manufacturers as long as the bearing dimensions are the same.

Follow up to this.
When you say it will fit other manufacturers headsets, will it fit Chris King?
I believe their bearings are quite different.

Ben answered on June 28, 2023

Most headsets use the same bearings, dimensionally, among the same size headset. The only differences are often in the construction (steel vs stainless steel), height (6.5mm vs 7mm) and contact angeles (36°x45° or 45°x45° which we offer both). A 52mm outside diameter bearing is 52mm whether its from Cane Creek, FSA, Crhis King, etc.

As long as the bearing you are using match the same dimensions as our bearings for:

outer diameter
inner diamater
height
contact angles

You can use our crown race with those bearings. I have used FSA and Chris King bearings with our crown races and vis versa but the dimensions need to be the same.

Which crown race will I require for installing a Niner RDO Carbon Gravel Fork with a 1.125" X 1.5" tapered steerer tube onto a 2014 Salsa Mariachi SS that has a Cane Creek 40 ZS44 headset? Eric asked on June 23, 2023

If the current headset on your bike is a straight ZS44 (top and bottom) you will need to remove the lower headset and install the EC44/40 headset. Part #BAA0085K and this comes with the correct crown race for your 1.5"" tapered fork.

If you already have a lower EC44 headset, you need the 52/40mm crown race. Part # BAA0010S

Best part of being a part of the Cane Creek family:  It’s very refreshing to work for a small, tight-knit company where we all share the same passions and to develop new products that make cycling better for everyone.
What you’ll find me doing on the weekends: Obviously riding bikes, but also wrenching on bikes or cars, exploring the mountains, and watching F1 races.
How I got here (at Cane Creek): Feeling pretty unfulfilled with a corporate engineering job, I happened to see that Cane Creek was hiring. I jumped at the opportunity to get my hands dirty working on the latest bike tech and was fortunate enough to be offered the position.
